The six channels

What sits in each slot

Four of them you know from any printer. The other two are what makes a UV machine a UV machine: without white you cannot print on dark material, and without varnish the material itself decides how your print looks.

Process colours

Cyan · magenta · yellow · black

  • These four build the image, the same as in any other printer.
  • On coloured, dark or transparent material you lay them over a white underbase. Without it, the colour of the material mixes into your print.
  • They cure under UV light on the object itself, in the same pass. No transfer paper and no press involved.

White

A channel of its own

  • White is the underbase that lets your colours keep their own colour: on coloured acrylic, dark wood, metal and transparent plastics.
  • It also works as a colour in its own right, for opaque white that is part of the design.
  • Printing with an underbase uses white as well as colour. Worth keeping in mind if you work on dark material a lot.

Varnish — clear ink

The sixth channel

  • Varnish has no colour. Think of it as a lacquer the printer lays down, over the whole image or just a part of it.
  • It cures under the same UV lamp as the colours, in the same pass — so it is not something you spray on afterwards.
  • That is how you get gloss where you want gloss and leave the rest matte. Build it up in layers and you can feel it too: raised texture and spot effects. It also protects the printed side.

White and varnish

The two channels sublimation does not have

White is ink here On a sublimation printer white is whatever the material already is: you simply leave it unprinted. On the V1000 white is a cartridge like any other, and the underbase that lets your colours keep their own colour.
Varnish is clear ink, not a colour It is the finish: a lacquer the printer lays over the image, or over part of it, cured in the same pass. Gloss where you want it, matte where you do not, and in several layers a texture you can feel.
Six slots to keep filled An empty white or varnish stops a job just as an empty cyan does. Worth keeping a spare of the ones you lean on.

Which machine does this ink go in?

The UltraChrome UV cartridges in our range are for the SureColor V1000. They do not go in a sublimation printer: that is a different machine with a different ink. View the V1000

What is varnish, in plain terms?

It is clear ink — a lacquer. The printer lays it over the image, or over just a part of it, and it cures under the same UV lamp as the colours, in the same pass. So the finish is printed, not sprayed on afterwards: you get gloss exactly where you placed it, and the rest stays matte. In the machine it is simply the sixth cartridge. Do you sell these in sets?

No, per cartridge. All six are the same price, so a set would only mean paying for channels you have not used up. If only your magenta is empty, that is all you order. View all six

Running the V1000?

Keep the wiper unit and the air filter in mind as well — an empty channel and a worn wiper stop the machine just as effectively.
